Marilyn Monroe’s biopic, “Blonde”, which is in the process of becoming Netflix’s first original film will have an NC-17 rating.
The decision has been taken by the film’s director as ‘political’ and ‘a bunch of horses.’
On Wednesday, the Motion Pictures Association of America declared that Andrew Dominik’s Marylin Monroe biopic, titled Blonde, would be given an X rating because of “some sexual content.”
The NC-17 rating prevents anyone under the age of 17 from seeing the film in a cinema – as opposed to an R-rated film, which necessitates that any person under 17 is accompanied by a parent.
Despite its NC-17 rating, the service has previously aired films with similar classification.
A new film about Marilyn Monroe, based on a Joyce Carol Oates novel of the same name, will be released soon. The movie will star Cuban actress Ana de Armas as Monroe.
Marilyn Monroe was primarily known for her work in comedy. She is best recognized as Lady Pink in Some Like It Hot (1959) and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). Marilyn Monroe lived from 1926 until 1962, and she is still considered one of the most famous actresses in film history.
It also stars Adrien Brody and Bobby Cannavale, with filming commencing this year and an expected release date later this year on Netflix.
When news of the film receiving an NC-17 rating in the United States circulated, Australian director Andrew Dominik did not hold back, calling it a ‘bunch of horses***… That’s just the ratings board being political,’ according to Screen Daily.
‘It’s a tough film,’ he continued. ‘If the audience doesn’t like it, they’re the ones to blame. It isn’t an election for public office.’
The rating system was, according to Patrik, hypocritical. He helmed the Jesse James thriller The Assassination of Jesse James in 2007 and the Killing Them Softly crime drama in 2012.
It took nine months for Leading lady de Armas to get a handle on Marilyn Monroe’s accent for the film, and it was difficult for her to master.
