An Irish App, Volu, lets iPhone users take 3D videos with ease

Clicking a 3D video involves a cumbersome process as it requires a lot of effort and time. Moroever, the cost to do it is very high as it involves work done by professionals in a studio. But now, this process is going to change as an Irish app “Volu” allows easily clicking of 3D videos on an iPhone.

An Irish startup Volograms has introduced this free app to facilitate easy clicking of 3D videos. Already available on the App Store since September, this app will soon become available on Android. It’s the first app capable of transforming ordinary mobile video into augmented reality, according to Volograms.

The app uses artificial intelligence to decipher a person’s 3D shape and texture in areas that the phone camera cannot view.

Thousands of human models have been used to train the algorithms. Then the company turns the moving picture into a hologram, also known as a “vologram.”

Users may employ the vologram in a variety of ways, such as shrinking or expanding the figure and superimposing it on any backdrop, changing the opacity or color of the picture, and combining realities by adding a virtual doppelganger to a regular video.

The objective, according to Rafael Pagés, the company’s CEO and co-founder, is to make augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) production accessible to the general public. Volu is also addressing a growing need for AR and VR content.

According to market research firm eMarketer, this year in the United States alone, almost 60 million people will use VR and more than 90 million will use AR at least once a month — up 36% and 28%, respectively, compared to 2019.

The majority of the time, the technology is utilized for gaming, entertainment, and social media, but as consumers and companies explore immersive experiences, a wider range of applications may appear.

The Covid-19 epidemic has also piqued public interest, with users experimenting with AR and VR technology to recreate in-person encounters in a virtual environment.

Volograms, which claims to have received €2.3 million ($2.7 million) in investment since its inception in 2018, is one of the few companies providing volumetric recording to the general public.

The Volu app is available for download for free, although the firm implies it will add premium “pro features.” Volograms’ major source of income presently comes from its professional studio service.
