A major inquiry report has stated that Brazil’s president should be declared guilty of poorly handling the Covid-19 situation in the country. Due to his poor efforts, Brazil faced devastation in the form of Covid-19 deaths. Hence, it stands at the second spot regarding the most deaths due to Covid-19 after the US.
The report says a lot about President Bolsonaro and it highlights his failure to tackle the Covid-19 situation effectively. As a result, the virus killed over 60,000 Brazilians. Moreover, the report also highlights many scandals and acts of corruption committed by Bolsonaro.
According to leaked excerpts, the commission is proposing nine charges against Mr. Bolsonaro.
Initial drafts of the report had recommended the president be charged with homicide and genocide against indigenous groups.
However, according to media reports, these proposals have been removed from the 1,200-page report, which accuses individuals of crimes against humanity, forgery, and incitement to crime.
It also still has to be approved by the Senate commission, which might veto and modify it, and there is no assurance that it will result in criminal charges.
President Bolsonaro has dismissed the congressional investigation into the shooting as a political stunt. He has long opposed lockdowns, masks, and vaccinations.
In March, he urged Brazilians to “stop whining” about Covid, a day after the country experienced a record number of fatalities in 24 hours.
However, Mr Bolsonaro’s popularity has already been damaged by the pandemic, and this news may make his bid for reelection in Brazil’s 2022 elections considerably more difficult.
Brazil’s confirmed Covid-related death toll is second only to the United States.
The Covid-19 pandemic has affected people’s lives adversely. And it has also led to a significant decline in global economic growth. Many countries like Brazil have faced its brunt on a large scale.
Hence, the six-month inquiry into the Covid-19 situation in Brazil wants to punish those responsible for the killings of Brazilians.
