On Saturday, actor Alec Baldwin called the fatal shooting on the set of his film a “one in a trillion occurrence,” and he spoke out in favor of restrictions on real guns in movies and television shows.
Baldwin opened clearly on this subject for the first time after killing the cinematographer Halyna Hutchins accidentally with a gun.
In his clarity, the actor said he was told by authorities in Santa Fe, New Mexico, not to give any statement on the investigation.
Alec referred to Halyna as his “friend” and stated that her family was “overwhelmed with sadness.”
This is definitely the worst possible scenario, but it is still an uncommon occurrence on film sets. I’d say this was a one-in-a-trillion event.
The shooting of a fake gun on the sets of the movie has sparked outrage from members of the creative community, who call for real guns to be prohibited on film and television sets. Alec said he was in agreement with the campaign.
“I’m not allowed to say anything because it’s still an on-going investigation,” the actor said, striding out of his vehicle and addressing photographers and camera crews who had tracked him down in a tiny Vermont town.
“We’re waiting for the sheriff’s department to inform us what their investigation uncovered,” he added.
On October 21, during a practice on the set, Alec fired a gun loaded with a real bullet, killing Hutchins and injuring Joel Souza, the director of the independent Western film Rust. Baldwin was informed that the weapon was safe.
No charges have been filed, and the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department has said that its inquiry would take time. It’s still unclear how live ammunition got onto the set.
“I do realize that any effort to restrict gun usage on film sets is something I’m very interested in,” he stated. “Some new policies must be implemented.”
“I’m not an expert in the area. So, as long as other people determine that one is the greatest approach to safeguard film set safety, I’m all for it and will assist with that in any way feasible.”
“Baldwin, best known for his work on TV comedy 30 Rock,” and his wife Hilaria have six children. He requested that the media stop tracking him and his family.
