Universal is developing a musical based on the Broadway hit, “Wicked,” with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo set to star

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are going to be a part of Universal's musical titled, "Wicked"

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo will be seen in Universal’s musical titled “Wicked”. They will portray the characters of Glinda and Elphaba, respectively. “In the Heights” director Jon M. Chu will direct the musical adaption by Universal.

Since February, he has been working on the project, and rumors about who will star in the film’s two main roles have circulated for months.

On Thursday night, the celebrities revealed their casts on Instagram.

“Cynthia, I’m incredibly grateful,” Erivo wrote. “I can’t wait to hug you. See you in Oz.” Grande and Erivo, who met on the set of the upcoming musical Wicked when they were 15 years old, exchanged messages over Instagram with a pink and green floral arrangement.

Grande made her Broadway debut in the hit musical “13,” while Nunn has appeared on television and in films like “Victorious,” with McKay’s upcoming film “Don’t Look Up.” Grande and Nunn are true multi-hyphenates; Grande is a Grammy-winning pop star.

Erivo, on the other hand, is near EGOT status – having won a Tony, Grammy and daytime Emmy for her performance as Celie in the 2015-2017 revival of “The Color Purple.”

“Wicked,” a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” tells the tale of everything that happened before Dorothy arrived in Oz.

In the original Broadway run, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth played frenemies Elphaba, who became the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good Witch.

After a lengthy hiatus owing to the COVID-19 epidemic, “Wicked” has resurrected its live shows.

The “Wicked” film adaptation has been a long time coming, and its most recent delay was caused by Stephen Daldry’s departure as director last October due to scheduling issues.

Winnie Holzman is working with Stephen Schwartz, who composed and penned the Broadway musical, to adapt the script.

Marc Platt will be the producer of the film. He is the one who also acted as the producer of the Broadway musical.
