The first weekly Top 10 list of the most popular movies and television shows on Netflix was announced on Tuesday to refute industry criticism that it has been picky in its public disclosures.
Reed Hastings, Netflix CEO, said to investors the alteration is coming for the company during the third-quarter earnings call on Oct 19.
Every Tuesday, Netflix will publish global Top 10 lists for English-language films and television series based on the hours seen, as well as non-English language series and movies. Also, it will introduce rankings for its most popular titles in over 90 countries.
The recent data shows that “Squid Game,” a Korean drama, is still extremely popular, with 42.8 million hours watched across the week of November 8. The third season of the crime drama “Narcos: Mexico” was the most watched, with 50.3 million viewing hours in English.
The star-studded action film “Red Notice,” which stars Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds, generated 148.7 million viewing hours to top the English-language film list in films. “Yara,” a crime drama set in Mexico, was the most popular non-English film.
Netflix, like other streaming services, has been less than forthcoming when it comes to the popularity of its movies and television shows. Many of Netflix’s competitors have also been less than candid about their viewership.
The previous version of Netflix counted any title watched for at least two minutes as a view. The company’s new data-tracking method is similar to that used by research firm Nielsen to measure screen time in the United States.
In June, Netflix announced the launch of its first study based on this new approach. According to Nielsen, there is plenty of room for growth for Netflix in the United States, which accounts for just 6% of total screen time.
