Singer/songwriter appeared at Madison Square Garden the previous week. Billy Joel was seen in a new look with a slimmer physique. He arrived at the iconic New York City venue for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic.
According to numerous publications, the star has dropped 50 pounds. The 72-year-old appeared on “The Howard Stern Show” two weeks ago, telling the shock jock that his weight reduction was aided by his rehabilitation following back surgery.
“The pain after back operations is excruciating,” Joel said. “I had back surgery early this year and the suffering was so bad that I lost my appetite.” I accepted it. I informed myself, ‘OK, I won’t eat as much.’”
I ate less and less and less. Then there was just more aggravation in life, which also influences your hunger.
While the weight loss was not deliberate, the performer remarked that he was pleased by it. “I had gotten a little fat,” recalled Joel. “I was ecstatic to slim down.”
In 2019, Joel spoke about aging as a performer that performs on stage frequently.
“This is a Peter Pan-type position,” he told Rolling Stone at the time.
“You begin, and you’re still young, and you’re rocking and rolling. That’s all you do for the rest of your life.
You start to lose touch with reality. ‘That does not appear to be right,’ I comment when I see photographs of myself at the Garden recently.
I got a lot older. I lost my hair. I was never much of a matinee idol to begin with, and here I am on stage still doing the same job as when I was 16.”
“It’s ridiculous for me to change my look so dramatically at this stage in life,” he said.
Joel revealed he has accepted his aging throughout his life. It’s all related to looks but it has no relation with music. He said he is not going to hide his true age at this stage of his life when he has crossed 70.
