‘Squid Game’ Creator Revealed that he’s in talks with Netflix about the Third Season

In an interview, Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed "a second season is in discussions but not yet confirmed," adding that he had a "basic story arc" for season two.

There will be two more rounds of Squid Game. In an interview with Korean broadcaster, KBS, Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that he is currently in negotiations with Netflix for a second and third season of his international blockbuster.

The dystopian South Korean TV series, which debuted on September 17, has since become Netflix’s most popular show in history, with 142 million member households globally and over 100 million views.

“I’m talking to Netflix about seasons 2 and 3,” the director said, according to The Korea Times. “We’ll reach a conclusion at any moment now.”

Following the show’s global success, Hwang revealed that he had been working on a season two plot and was in negotiations with Netflix for another season — something he felt “a lot of pressure” for while in Korea and had since been asked about numerous times by the press in Los Angeles.

“I have a rudimentary story for season two — it’s all in my head — and I’m currently in the planning stage,” says the writer-director.“I’m not sure when it will happen, but I’ll have more information about it at a later time.”

A Netflix spokesperson told THR that a sequel is in the works, but that it has yet to be confirmed. “A second season is being discussed, but hasn’t been confirmed,” they said.

During his L.A. Q&A session, Hwang avoided providing specifics about the second season’s plot, only stating that “Gi-hun will be back and will do something for the world.”

Squid Game tells the story of Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-Jae), a boy who receives an intriguing invitation to participate in a deadly game of Korean traditional children’s games.

The games are held in a secret location and involve 456 financially disadvantaged individuals who compete for 45.6 billion won in prize money.
